Adopting a cattle dog
North Metro Veterinary Hospital is dedicated to the placement of
Australian Cattle Dogs and all Pets regardless of
Breed or Medical circumstances!
Please research specific breeds prior to the commitment of adoption enabling you to make the right choice for you and your family.
Around the mid 1800's, The Australian Cattle Dogs were developed in their
Homeland of Australia. The Settlers of this era needed a dog with stamina
strength and intelligence to move and control cattle across rugged terrain
and unpredictable weather.
Throughout many generations of crossbreeding, it was the combination of
The Blue Merle-Smooth Coated Collie, Dingo, Australian Kelpie, Dalmatian
And Bull Terrier that resulted in today's Australian Cattle Dog or ACD.

Australian Cattle Dogs, Dingo, Queens land Heeler, Red Heeler, Blue Heeler,
and Australian Heeler are all names commonly used for this breed
The first official registry required these dogs had an established name and
‘Australian Cattle Dog' was then chosen.
This name acknowledges the wide spread working usage of the dogs and their origin without putting one variant of the name ahead of the others.

For the Adoption of Australian Cattle Dogs, please read the following
Information Carefully!
These dogs are particular and extremely strong willed.
Only truly dedicated humans should consider harboring this breed.
Cattle dogs take a considerable amount of time and energy for the
A ordinary Human — As puppies, they are highly determined to seek
and destroy anything and everything if left alone to their own devices.
Australian Cattle dogs have been bred to herd and do so with intense
force — i.e.: biting and nipping at heels and legs. Without a herd of Cattle,
most will find other things to herd, such as you, your cats, children or most
anything that moves — this can be a dangerous combination if not curtailed
early on as puppies for their own safety as well as yours!
A strong herding instinct and tendency to bite also means these dogs are
extremely mouthy —Cattle dogs use their mouths constantly and love to
taste test everything — even people as a form of acceptance and affection!
Once a Cattle Dog gains the trust of a person or family, they can be a true
and loyal companion — Yet they need training and continual socialization
to keep them from running your home!
The Australian Cattle Dog can co-exist with children and all other pets if
socialized properly.
Their versatility is endless and the rewards of having
such a faithful companion is truly a rewarding gift.
Please make sure this is the right choice for you and your family
